Love Hike: Turkey Run State Park – Indiana Day Trip

I call it a “Love Hike” because almost everything feels romantic when you get to do it with your special human after having such limited time as a result from a long distance relationship (check out my post “Kisses All Over” for more about our long distance experience. As part as a “welcome to Indiana starter pack,” Matt and I received “Indiana Bucket List Adventure Guide” as a gift. For our first Indiana weekend, we decided to try out the recommendation for Rocky Hollow-Falls Canyon Nature Preserve located in Turkey Run State Park. Turkey Run State Park is also listed later in the book, so we knocked out two items from the book in one! Turkey Run is a beautiful state park in Indiana and has been ranked several times as the #1 park in Indiana.

On our road trip to the park, we stopped for snacks and splurged on a few scratchers. I didn’t win anything, but Matt won $50! The drive to Turkey Run is scenic and easy through the country and without heavy traffic. To enter the part for in-state residents, it will cost $7/ vehicle (I think it was $9 for out-of-state residents). We went late Saturday morning and it was very busy. Unfortunately there were people all over the trails that day.

Rocky Hollow-Falls Canyon Nature Preserve was such a fun area to explore. There is a suspension bridge, small canyon to walk through, ladders, waterfalls and lots of wild flowers! You will receive a map when you enter the park with all the trails. We started on trail #3 and switched over to trail #9. Loved it and totally recommend! We didn’t keep a super close eye on time or mileage but we probably walked 2-3 miles and was there for 2-3 hours.

After our hike, we drove about 15 minutes to Rockville, IN and had alate lunch at The Hog Pit in The Thirty-Six Saloon. This is a biker bar with a large covered and uncovered patio (it also has indoor seating, but we did not go inside). The atmosphere lived up to the reputation of a biker bar (family friend though) and the food was delicious! I had a Biker Babe Burger with a side of mac n’ cheese. SO GOOD! After lunch dinner we headed home for showers and naps. Turkey Run was such a fun day hike spot. It was far more beautiful than we expected for being in Indiana. We are excited to try out the next recommendation from out Indiana Bucket List Book!
